I'm Dry, the Turkey Isn't.

I hear friends seeking guidance about maintaining sobriety during Thanksgiving, which can be a challenging holiday. While I won't speak on behalf of twelve step groups or higher powers, I can share some practical and spiritual wisdom that many have found helpful:

Remember that each moment of sobriety is valuable and worthy of gratitude. During Thanksgiving especially, you might focus on appreciating your journey toward wellness and the strength you've developed along the way.

Some practical suggestions that incorporate spiritual elements:
- Start your day with quiet reflection or prayer to center yourself
- Have a trusted friend or sponsor on speed-dial who you can reach out to if needed
- Create an exit plan for any gatherings where you might feel triggered
- Consider attending an extra recovery meeting before or after family events
- Focus on giving service to others at gatherings - helping in the kitchen or with cleanup can provide purpose and distraction
- Practice gratitude for your sobriety and the positive changes in your life

Many find it helpful to remember that while Thanksgiving is one day, your sobriety is a gift you give yourself every day. You might consider starting a new tradition that supports your recovery, like volunteering at a local shelter or hosting a sober gathering.

And some extra help for those struggling with food addiction...

Here are thoughtful strategies to help maintain a balanced approach to eating during Thanksgiving:

Before the meal:
- Eat a normal breakfast/lunch - skipping meals often leads to overconsumption later
- Stay hydrated throughout the day - sometimes thirst masquerades as hunger
- Plan which foods matter most to you - be selective about your favorites rather than trying everything

During the meal:
- Use a smaller plate if available
- Take small portions initially - you can always get seconds if truly hungry
- Eat slowly and pause between bites - it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register fullness
- Engage in conversation - focusing on connecting with others rather than just the food
- Put your fork down between bites
- Take sips of water throughout the meal

Mindful eating techniques:
- Before eating, take a moment to appreciate the food and effort that went into preparing it
- Pay attention to flavors and textures as you eat
- Check in with your hunger/fullness levels periodically
- Stop eating when you feel satisfied, not stuffed
- Remember that leftovers will be available tomorrow - you don't need to eat everything today

However you spend your day, I hope its a joyful one!
